Australians Brace for Tropical Cyclone Alfred

Dangerous conditions brought on by Tropical Cyclone Alfred’s destructive winds and flooding have caused thousands of people to evacuate on Australia’s eastern coasts, and the storm has not even made landfall yet.

“Tropical Cyclone Alfred remains a Category 2 system. It is moving towards the Southeast Queensland Coast, and expected to cross the barrier islands in the early hours of Saturday morning, and to move towards to north of the Brisbane C.B.D. as we get through to midday on Saturday. The wind, rainfall, storm surge and flood risks remain and we are expecting those hazards to continue to develop as the system approaches.” “This is not the time to go for a swim or a surf. This is not the time to go for an unnecessary drive. People are encouraged to stay where they are, listen to the advice of emergency services.”
